Senator Pudens life is documented, but those of his daughters is derived only by the existence of two ancient churches, Santa Prassede and Santa Pudenziana in Rome.
It is possible that a wrong interpretation of the titulus led to the creation of the figure of Pudentiana, and that the "church of Santa Pudenziana" was actually a "church of Pudens". Pudentiana is the genitive form of Pudens. Had the church originally been dedicated to or founded by a woman named Pudentiana, it should have been called Titulus Pudentianae. This latter form is first attested in the 4th century apse mosaic; earlier documents and inscriptions use Pudentiana. |
